Pitch 2: The Sixth Scents

The Sixth Scents

A multi-sensory reality visualizing the power of scent (smell-o-vision)

  • An AR experience built around a diffuser that sporadically puffs out a fragrance

    • An animated theme is built around the base notes, AR is pinned to the diffuser site, concealing and inviting “magic”

    • Scaled to mirror the fragrance’s sillage

    • Fragrances unfold with time, so a viewer is rewarded with multiple sequences for lingering/exploring

      • Hides a new sequence in an asset activated by touch

      • Potentially includes lettering though not necessary

      • If working with a partner brand, logo or bottle could link out to product

Purpose

  • Broadcast the harmony of digital media and analog craftsmanship

  • Create a heightened “present” despite the presence of a device

Prior Work

Flat lay projects that demonstrate elegance and sophistication.

  • Flowers, salts, patterns

  • First AR project, Bloom, working harmoniously within the environment

  • Trust the Unfolding origami AR project

    • Utilized animation in Aero for subtle, thoughtful movement without distracting

    • Sixth Scents provides opportunity for wide socials sharing and distribution

  • Prototyped Food Mural for SXSW 2017

    • Built elevation via Illustrator which was converted to CAD by construction company

    • Measured down to the donut hole diameter, case study here.

Challenges

  • Fabrication will require prototyping a pedestal, as this is completely new

    • Biggest concern is the QR Code, whether it can be up top over the diffuser mouth

    • Could also move around the sides for a multi-user experience

      • in its place a “Pin Here” sticker

  • Travel paths and UI may require multiple units

    • could be solved with a hexagonal pedestal

  • Will require monitoring to replace fragrances

    • some diffusers can be timed

  • Unsure if this will be co-sponsored as of yet

OPPORTUNITIES

  • Potential sponsorship

    • Brand bottle or logo could link out to POS, the first kind of interactive silo-to-purchase

  • Additional component in scent stick that reveals a QR code when sprayed with perfume

    • Design component that gets into public’s hands via perfume counters/sellers

Timeline: approx. 2.5-3.5 weeks (complexity dependent)

  • 3-4 days research

  • 1 day shooting

  • 2-3 days post production

  • 3-4 days Aero implementation

  • 5-7 days working with fabricator/prototyping

  • likely travel coverage and MAX pass to run/setup

Budget

$18-27k approx.

  • Considers prototyping

  • Does not cover the construction of diffuser podium(s), needs more research, interested in chatting with MAX’s fabrication team
