The Moving Creative Direction of Danielle Evans

Hi Aero, I’m Danielle.

Food Typographer making the Future Palatable.

What is a food typographer? First and foremost, a job I created out of a multi-generalist work practice and deep awareness of food as conduit between people, places, and ideas. I realized with a typographer’s touch everyday objects speak to the human condition, motivated by the power of language.

Clients include Target, Disney, KC Chiefs, Bath&Body Works, Cadillac, Aria, Wix, Chevy, Chase Bank, Condé Nast, Culvers, Sketch App, TAZO, TESCO and more. Editorial includes Washington Post, LA Times, Seattle Times, The Guardian, FOUR and more.

PERTINENT SKILLS

I started with an illustration degree and in the last decade taught myself, photography, gaffing, editing, styling, design, stop motion, video, video editing— even interior design for good measure. All of these skills create an accessible, thoughtful viewer experience. Below you’ll find examples.

This is not my first time forging new worlds.

  • My work opened a sub-genre of design, cited in dissertations and universities, and used globally in advertising.

  • I achieved this as a solo artist from a lower class background without an elite education while living in the Midwest.

  • As a CD, I had agents for 6 years. Together we built and contracted out teams of photographers, food stylists, and PAs for large ad campaigns. I often worked alone as I progressed in my skills/thru the pandemic.

  • I am scrappy, and while immensely grateful for my resourcefulness, I have been largely under-resourced.

However, I’ve squeezed this multi-sensory output into 2D. Eventually I discovered physics, string theory, and grew in energetic awareness. Naturally this 3D work had to shift. Photos became videos (4D) with the introduction of motion and time.

Why Aero?

Augmented reality is the 5D, a reality where time and space bend. If a viewer has a phone, they can have an individual view of a shared experience via QR code. Aero is a glimpse of the future, and with my haptic style of work, one where others can envision themselves.

Everyday objects have limited lives. My work has traditionally been experienced by myself and those on shoot with me. With Aero, now everyone can envision these realities, larger than life, with multimedia capabilities.

Aero is a catch-all for various Adobe products. I’ve used the following in my work: Premiere, Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Stock and Audition. Vector, photo, and video assets live harmoniously in Aero. While I believe in multiple realities, I cannot see this work any other way.

ADobe aero - Max and Beyond

I was asked to pitch three ideas for 2022 MAX. While I believe these are all remarkable solutions, they require an expanded budget. Some require an expanded timeline beyond the event.

There is a timeline where all of these projects find their resources. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Pitch 2: The Sixth Scents

The Sixth Scents

A multi-sensory reality visualizing the power of scent (smell-o-vision)

  • An AR experience built around a diffuser that sporadically puffs out a fragrance

    • An animated theme is built around the base notes, AR is pinned to the diffuser site, concealing and inviting “magic”

    • Scaled to mirror the fragrance’s sillage

    • Fragrances unfold with time, so a viewer is rewarded with multiple sequences for lingering/exploring

      • Hides a new sequence in an asset activated by touch

      • Potentially includes lettering though not necessary

      • If working with a partner brand, logo or bottle could link out to product

Purpose

  • Broadcast the harmony of digital media and analog craftsmanship

  • Create a heightened “present” despite the presence of a device

Prior Work

Flat lay projects that demonstrate elegance and sophistication.

  • Flowers, salts, patterns

  • First AR project, Bloom, working harmoniously within the environment

  • Trust the Unfolding origami AR project

    • Utilized animation in Aero for subtle, thoughtful movement without distracting

    • Sixth Scents provides opportunity for wide socials sharing and distribution

  • Prototyped Food Mural for SXSW 2017

    • Built elevation via Illustrator which was converted to CAD by construction company

    • Measured down to the donut hole diameter, case study here.

Challenges

  • Fabrication will require prototyping a pedestal, as this is completely new

    • Biggest concern is the QR Code, whether it can be up top over the diffuser mouth

    • Could also move around the sides for a multi-user experience

      • in its place a “Pin Here” sticker

  • Travel paths and UI may require multiple units

    • could be solved with a hexagonal pedestal

  • Will require monitoring to replace fragrances

    • some diffusers can be timed

  • Unsure if this will be co-sponsored as of yet

OPPORTUNITIES

  • Potential sponsorship

    • Brand bottle or logo could link out to POS, the first kind of interactive silo-to-purchase

  • Additional component in scent stick that reveals a QR code when sprayed with perfume

    • Design component that gets into public’s hands via perfume counters/sellers

Timeline: approx. 2.5-3.5 weeks (complexity dependent)

  • 3-4 days research

  • 1 day shooting

  • 2-3 days post production

  • 3-4 days Aero implementation

  • 5-7 days working with fabricator/prototyping

  • likely travel coverage and MAX pass to run/setup

Budget

$18-27k approx.

  • Considers prototyping

  • Does not cover the construction of diffuser podium(s), needs more research, interested in chatting with MAX’s fabrication team
